We produce and source this hay locally within  South Africa and neighbouring countries where desert conditions make drying alfalfa properly possible. Each batch is slightly different and we sell this hay on test results matching the customer’s needs. Average batches are around 3150 ton and may be as large as 8000 to 35000 ton.

Because many customers need long term consistent supplies that can be delivered over time it is common for us to contract 1 or multiple batches to the same customer for future delivery. This allows us to reserve the hay in our inventory and deliver over time as needed. 3×4 bales weigh around 1400lb are most common although we do sell some in 4×4 2000lb and 3×3 1000lb sizes as well. All these bale sizes can be easily moved with a loader equipped with bale spears.

Eragrostis is a wiry, perennial grass that is native to South Africa. It was introduced into the United States in 1927, and is now widely used as a fodder crop in the USA . There are numerous species, differing somewhat in palatability, with conferta and robusta heading the list, and curvula being less palatable. Acceptability to stock declines rapidly with age of growth, some genotypes becoming fibrous and unpalatable sooner than other. Chopped, dusty hay was found to be less palatable than whole grass.

Eragrostis is invaluable both as a pasture species for early spring grazing, and for hay making after the winter shortages as it commences growth earlier in the season than most other summer growing fodder types. Its popularity as a hay crop is for the reason that it is relatively easy to cure. The quality of the pasture as grazing or of the hay produced is dependent on fertilization, the fertility status of the soil, rainfall, and the stage of utilization.

Orchard grass 1st cut sweet hay is a very soft hay baled at 25% moisture when conditions did not allow for drying. The hay was cut at optimum maturity and tests 15% as 1st cutting. Highly palatable it’s an excellent cattle feed and in some cases can be fed to horses. The wrap is very high quality having 10 layers to keep any air out. The hay was also baled at high density to keep air out of the bale and preserve the hay better. Sweet hay is a term used when hay is baled with some moisture but not enough moisture to make the hay ensile or ferment.

Our Triticale is cut early just at flag leaf stage and bailed high density in 3×4 bales then wrapped with 10 layers of plastic to keep all air out. We dry it for 3 days to get the moisture down as low as possible before bailing.

Producers who plan to feed their Teff to lactating cows should pay special attention to harvest maturity. Like other grasses and legumes, Teff’s forage quality decreases with maturity. Harvest just before heading to maximize Relative Feed Quality (RFQ) and milk per ton. High quality Teff hay normally has a range from 100 to 125 RFQ.

Animals prefer Teff to other forages so Teff is best fed in a Total Mixed Ration (TMR) to deter bunk-sorting. Most nutritionists will find Teff easy to fit into the ration with the results of a good feed test and an adequate forage inventory.
